My name is Emily Murray and I am a surface pattern designer based in Philadelphia, PA. I might live in the big city, but whenever I get a chance, I drive my beat up red subaru outback an hour north of the city, back to the deciduous forests and the little river towns where I spent my childhood, where I can be inspired by the greatest pattern maker there is: nature. Nature's ability to create brilliant and infinitely varied patterns is unparalleled. Time and again I find myself returning to her to soak up her brilliance.

Back home in the city, I toil away in my little office studio creating patterns. Utilizing my background in graphic design and my affinity for floral design, I create patterns inspired by nature that are a reflection of my personal style. A style which seeks to balance playfulness and sophistication, fun and formality. I design with the home in mind, creating work that would suit a wide variety of home goods. That being said, I like to think that my patterns would be just as at home on a sundress or a greeting card as they would on bedding or curtains.

If I have learned anything from creating patterns it is that they seem to have a life of their own. Creating them is a beautifully intricate dance of creativity and problem solving. At the end of the day, when the last little composition tweak or recolor is complete every pattern I make has to pass one last test. I ask myself: Does this pattern bring me joy? Because in the end that's what it's all about for me. Spreading joy.
